Valentine’s day is a time to celebrate love. It is here we have an opportunity to reflect and show appreciation for the special people in our lives. In the spirit of this, we are reminded of the blossoming romance between contemporary architects and modern exterior cladding. Architects are head over heels for the latest innovations in cladding, and these modern materials love them back.
As exterior design rises above the limitations of traditional methods, designers are free to express their passion, using modern exterior cladding materials to articulate messages of love to the world.
Fall in love with modern exterior cladding this Valentine’s day, as we look upon some beautiful examples of expressive and innovative facade.
Examples of Modern Exterior Cladding
Formosa 1140
This housing project built in West Hollywood uses modern metal exterior cladding to foster communal love for its residents. A glance is all it takes to recognize the depth of this design, as an outer and inner layer of paneling blurs the line between exterior and interior. The open concept of the outer shell allows for detailed accents that allow the sun to shine through.
This is a look that can be achieved using metal mesh, a material with a luxurious appearance that is a favourite for both interior and exterior design. The first layer on the Formosa building’s facade is open, and creates a public space for residents to share quality time with one another.
The bold red metal siding is beautifully arranged, but the most alluring thing is the space it creates facilitates community. This allows the relationships formed within to reveal themselves as an element of the building’s exterior.
Estar Móveis
Sometimes, love grows cold, and must be rekindled. This is what design team SuperLimão Studio accomplished when updating the facade of a 60 year old furniture brand in São Paulo, Brazil.
The storefront’s new design showcases the many forms that metal can take for the purpose of cladding. Each panel is cut in the shape of a honeycomb, creating a playful yet elegant look which invites customers inside to rediscover their passion for the product offered within.
Casino of Montréal
We often dress in our fanciest clothes to go out with our loved ones on Valentine’s day, and this Casino located in Montréal does just that, every day of the year.
Smartly clad in white metal, its design is as sharp as a well ironed collar, and points upward towards a crown of jewelry-like accents. Its metallic finish gleams from the golden light of its interior, in the same way that our loved ones reflect in our eyes.
Cottage
This cottage designed by Gray Organschi is a modern take on the romantic getaway. Located in Connecticut, the building’s facade is composed of thermally modified wood siding and big glass windows that are well balanced, and the design blends artfully with the natural environment surrounding it.
Lovers can retreat to a world of their own, wrapped warmly in each other’s arms, sheltered by this novel take on the cottage.
Bergeron Centre
This York University building, affectionately nicknamed “The Cloud,” is a painstakingly detailed work of modern exterior cladding. The facade is composed of over 8000 panels, and each is entirely unique!
Each piece is fit together in a complex three dimensional puzzle, forming an airy cloud that seems to float right off the street. Every glance reveals a new geometry, in the same way that we always find new things to appreciate about the people we love.
The Wave
Relationships are not always easy, and sometimes we encounter rough waters with our loved ones that force us to strengthen our bonds. This is the principle behind the decision to utilize aluminum facade for the surreal architecture project in Almere, Netherlands.
This apartment complex stands right beside the sea, and thus must be prepared to handle the effects of humidity and high salt content. Without the reliable protection that aluminum offers, this building could be corroded by the sea. Instead, it stands strong, through all of life’s waves.
20 Elmcrest
This home is near to our hearts, as we designed and installed it’s smooth and distinct grey facade (Alpolic CVG Grey). Our love for ACM panels and passion for creating a reliable sense of affinity with our building partners produced an exemplary display of modern exterior cladding systems that has the homeowner, architect, passers by, and us smitten.
In love and in construction, we often find ourselves leaping into new experiences, and push ourselves out of our comfort zones. This home in Mississauga gave us the opportunity to do just that! The roof, which matches the walls, was a new challenge for us to approach and execute.
This home, and it’s modern facade, will always hold a special place in our hearts. The good news is, we have a lot more love to give, and we want to share it and our passion for modern exterior cladding design throughout the GTA!
Your Next Cladding Project
Thanks to the creative potential of modern cladding materials, your next residential or commercial project can feature an exterior facade that you will love for many years to come!
Perhaps the most alluring of these modern cladding materials is the ACM panel, which in itself is a symbol of love. Aluminum Composite Material is metaphorical of our own desires for strong relationships. These panels form from the marriage of aluminum and either a polyethylene or fire-retardant core.
Like the perfect significant other, each raw material draws strength from the complimentary attributes of the other. Out of this romance comes a modern cladding solution which empowers architects and designers to express their passion in the creation of beautiful buildings.
